Back In Motion - Equestrian

I am qualified to treat both horse and rider and have over 35 years’ experience in the equestrian industry.

Early on in my work as a sports therapist, I noticed just how much the rider’s position and postural faults directly affected the horse’s way of going, often leading to compensatory postural and gait changes as the horse tried to adapt.

This led me to specialise in rider biomechanics which is often overlooked but rider position is a critical component, particularly if there is an underlying lameness or behavioural issue already presenting itself in the horse.

Most people have postural issues caused by injury, bad postural habits, everyday activities such as mucking out, carrying water buckets and haynets or sitting for long periods at a desk. Over time this leads to some muscle groups becoming short and tight and others being over stretched and weak.

A stiff, immobile, asymmetrical, or unbalanced rider will affect the horse’s way of going and the horse will mirror the stiffness and tension in the rider. The aim is to create a balanced picture and to have a greater partnership with your horse at a deeper level.

Relaxation and breathwork techniques are also used for riders who suffer from stress and anxiety whilst riding or handling horses.

Common Rider Problems:

Do you experience any of the following whilst riding?

They are all issues that can be resolved or greatly improved with a targeted treatment plan.

  • Constantly losing one stirrup or readjusting stirrups to try and get comfortable.
  • Gripping up with the lower leg
  • Inflexible pelvis, where absorbing the movement of the horse is difficult.
  • Tipping forward or leaning back in the saddle.
  • Collapsing on one side of your body- either shoulder or hip
  • Uneven rein contact.
  • Feeling like you are going against the horse’s movement rather than with it.
  • Holding your breath due to anxiety or when struggling to ride certain movements.
  • You are having lessons, but bodily restrictions mean you are making limited progress.

Treatments & Assessments offered:

Postural and riding techniques can be assessed either in clinic on a static “horse” or whilst riding your horse. Video assessments can be arranged if you are out of the travel range within Hampshire or Wiltshire.

I offer a bespoke massage treatment specifically for riders, where the problem areas are targeted, and suitable stretches or exercises carried out.

The clinic also works with the award-winning mind and body coach, Kim Ingleby who is an experienced equestrian in her own right and can help you achieve your goals and overcome any blocks you may have.

I believe that it important to take a holistic approach and often work alongside other professionals such as physios, equine dentists, saddle fitters and riding instructors to get the best possible outcome for horse & rider.
